Important safety notice for shoelaces in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety (GPSR)

This is a targeted safety notice for the correct and safe use of shoelaces (flat/round, cotton, polyester, nylon, elastic, silicone “no-tie”, reflective; with aglets/metal tips, locking mechanisms, clips, magnetic fastenings). Since they may contain small metal or magnetic parts, create hazardous loose ends, and increase the risk of tripping or catching if the length is inappropriate, please follow the instructions below.

Basic safety and handling principles

• Keep out of reach of small children: Locks, aglets, and magnets pose a risk of swallowing/inhalation; the product is not a toy.
• Check before use: Inspect the condition of fibers, knots, aglets, and locks; replace torn, frayed, or cracked parts.
• Fire and heat: Most textiles are flammable; keep away from open flames and hot surfaces.
• Magnetic/metal parts: Keep away from payment cards and sensitive electronics; follow staff instructions during security checks/MRI.

Correct and safe use

• Correct length and tying: Choose length according to the number of eyelets; tie and tuck in loose ends. Avoid contact of laces with bicycle chains, pedals, escalators, and moving machine parts.
• Locking mechanisms and clips: Adjust so they do not interfere with walking/sports; secure loose ends inside the shoe or under the tongue.
• Elastic and silicone systems: Do not stretch beyond the manufacturer’s limit; excessive tension may impair foot circulation.
• Children and seniors: Prefer solutions with safe quick release; regularly check tightness to prevent foot constriction.
• Purpose: Shoelaces are not intended for tying objects, lifting, or securing; do not use as a cord for carrying loads.

Cleaning, maintenance, and storage

• Textile shoelaces: Wash according to the label, ideally in a laundry bag; avoid bleaches that weaken fibers.
• Silicone/TPR: Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; avoid prolonged exposure to UV and high heat (deformation).
• Metal parts: After contact with sweat/salty water, wipe dry to prevent corrosion and discoloration of footwear.
• Storage: Store in a dry and dark place; avoid sharp bends and prolonged stretching of elastic fibers.

Specific health warnings

• Allergies and sensitive skin: Some metals (e.g., nickel in aglets), dyes, and latex in elastics may cause reactions; replace laces if redness or itching occurs.
• Circulation and pressure: Over-tightened lacing may cause numbness and cramps; adjust tension according to activity and foot shape.
• Safety during movement: Long, unsecured ends increase the risk of tripping; regularly check tying, especially for children.

Disposal

• Sorted waste and textile collection: Textile shoelaces should be handed over to textile collection; silicone/TPR components disposed of according to local regulations. Separate metal/magnetic parts if possible.

Incidents and contact

• In case of an incident (tripping, catching in machinery, allergic reaction) immediately stop using the product. Keep the product and proof of purchase for reporting purposes.
