Important safety notice for berets in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety (GPSR)

This is a targeted safety notice for the correct and safe use of berets (woolen, acrylic/knitted, felt, lined, with decorations such as brooches, embroidery or appliqués, possibly with a cord/loop). Since they may contain small parts, cords, and flammable materials and come into contact with the skin, please follow the instructions below.

Basic safety and handling principles

• Keep out of reach of small children: Removable decorations (brooches, buttons, stones) and small parts pose a choking hazard; the product is not a toy.
• Cords and loops: Long cords around the head/neck can cause strangulation; do not tie them tightly and do not use berets with long cords during sleep or unsupervised play.
• Fire and heat: Wool and synthetic fibers are flammable; keep away from open flames, sparks, and hot surfaces.
• Visibility and safety: Do not wear so that it obstructs the field of vision; do not wear under helmets or PPE unless expressly intended.

Correct and safe use

• Size and comfort: Choose a size that does not constrict or slip; discontinue use if headaches or irritation occur.
• Decorations and brooches: Handle pins carefully when attaching brooches; point sharp elements away from the skin and ensure secure fastening.
• Weather conditions: Unprotected materials may stain clothing or deform when wet; use a waterproof cover in heavy rain/snow.
• Activities: Do not wear berets during sports, machine work, or activities with increased risk of entanglement.

Cleaning, maintenance, and storage

• Cleaning by material: Woolen/felt berets should be hand washed in cold water or dry cleaned according to instructions; acrylic/knitted berets should be cleaned with a mild detergent; do not wring by twisting.
• Drying and shaping: Dry flat away from direct sunlight and heat sources; reshape to original form after washing.
• Decoration maintenance: Regularly check the strength of seams and attachment of appliqués; tighten or remove loose parts.
• Storage: Store dry and ventilated; protect woolen berets from moths (e.g., with a sachet of lavender/cedar).

Specific health warnings

• Allergies and sensitive skin: Wool, latex bands, dyes, or metal parts (e.g., nickel) may cause reactions; discontinue use if redness, itching, or rash occurs.
• Hygiene: After sweating, allow the scalp and beret to dry; prolonged moisture may cause irritation.

Disposal

• Sorted waste: Dispose of textiles according to local regulations (textile collection); separate metal decorations. Wrap sharp brooch pins to prevent injury to waste handlers.

Incidents and contact

• In case of an incident (strangulation by cord, allergic reaction, injury by pin), stop using the product immediately and seek medical help if necessary. Keep the product and proof of purchase for complaint handling.
