Important Safety Notice for Knife Sharpeners in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on General Product Safety (GPSR)

This is a targeted safety notice for the correct and safe use of knife sharpeners. Due to abrasive surfaces, moving/rotating parts, metal shavings, and possible electrical hazards, it is essential to follow the instructions below to prevent injuries and damage. This notice is issued based on the requirements of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on General Product Safety (hereinafter referred to as “GPSR”).

Basic Safety and Handling Principles

• Keep out of reach of children: There is a risk of injury from the knife blade, flying shavings, and contact with abrasive surfaces or rotating parts.
• Stability and workspace: Place the sharpener on a stable, non-slip surface in a well-lit and ventilated area; keep hands and fingers away from the sharpening path.
• Clothing and accessories: Wear loose clothing, tie back long hair, remove loose jewelry; do not wear gloves that could get caught when using electric sharpeners.
• Electrical safety: For electric sharpeners, use undamaged cables and sockets, work with dry hands and away from damp environments; unplug before cleaning or replacing parts.
• Protective equipment: Use safety goggles; consider hearing protection and a dust mask for prolonged or noisy sharpening.

Correct and Safe Use

• Use as intended: Sharpen only knives and only in the manner specified by the manufacturer (e.g., water stones with water, oil stones with appropriate oil, pull-through sharpeners with recommended pressure and angle).
• Compatibility: Do not use on ceramic or serrated blades unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer; do not sharpen other tools or materials.
• Technique and force: Maintain the recommended angle, do not apply excessive pressure, and do not sharpen crosswise; do not rock the knife side to side to avoid chipping the edge or kickback.
• Sparks and heat: Keep the source of sparks away from flammable materials during dry sharpening; prevent overheating of the blade – take breaks or use cooling as instructed.
• Safe surroundings: Do not place knives in the sink or under piles of dishes during work; wipe the knife immediately after sharpening and store safely.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Storage

• Cleaning: Disconnect electric sharpeners from the power supply before cleaning; remove metal shavings and dust as instructed, do not clean electrical parts with water. Rinse water stones after use and allow to dry.
• Maintenance: Regularly level and flatten sharpening stones according to instructions; replace worn inserts or discs only with compatible parts. Do not use non-recommended lubricants or chemicals.
• Storage: Store in a dry place away from moisture and dust; protect electrical devices from condensation and mechanical damage.

Specific Health Warnings

• Eyes and respiratory tract: Metal dust and shavings can irritate eyes and respiratory tract – use safety goggles and work in a ventilated area.
• Injuries and burns: You can cut yourself on the edge of a freshly sharpened knife; metal and sparks may be hot – handle carefully.
• Electronic components: If you suspect malfunction, burning smell, or overheating, stop use immediately and have the device checked by a professional.

Disposal

• Safe disposal: Dispose of worn sharpening discs and modules according to local regulations; hand over electric sharpeners to electronic waste collection points.

Incidents and Contact

• In case of an incident (injury, eye or respiratory irritation, electrical fault) stop using the product immediately. Keep the product and proof of purchase for complaint processing.
